This course examines the challenges faced by Deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) individuals in adapting to the teaching, learning, and communication practices of mainstream postsecondary education. Students explore communication barriers that may arise in lectures, tutorials, group discussions, presentations, laboratory work, and other learning activities, which can contribute to social alienation. Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the course develops understanding of the nature and causes of hearing loss (SDG 3), promotes strategies to reduce communication barriers and misconceptions about D/HH individuals (SDG 10), and examines how the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities addresses issues related to deafness, sign language, Deaf communication, and information accessibility. The course also analyzes challenges affecting D/HH communities in healthcare, education, and employment (SDG 16), while emphasizing equal opportunities and support for quality education (SDG 4). Seven themes are delivered through lectures, micromodules, and multimedia resources.
