This Putonghua taster course aims to introduce local students to authentic ways of expressing themselves in situations at different formality levels (i.e. casual, semi-formal, and formal). Course contents focus on demonstrating Putonghua used in selected scenarios at different registers, with examples drawn from a multitude of authentic multimedia sources. Pronunciation notes will also be provided. Students’ awareness of appropriateness in usage will be increased upon completion of the course.

This course is an asynchronous online course offering to CUHK international students. This taster course focuses on helping students engage in basic daily social interaction using Cantonese.

Introduction: This is the one-credit asynchronous Online Taster Courses for students who are interested in learning Putonghua (Mandarin) at their own pace. Students will learn in a low-pressure environment by watching prerecorded videos and completing online exercises. They will acquire a basic understanding of Putonghua (Mandarin) upon completion of the course(s). These courses are ideal for students who would like to have a taste of language learning before taking a full 3-unit language course.

Course Structure: 13-15 class sessions in the form of prerecorded videos on KEEP. Self-paced learning; around 12-15 hours required. 

Assessment: Assignment 80% Participation 20%​

Eligibility: All CUHK undergraduate, postgraduate and exchange students are welcome.

This online course enables students to acquire some basics of Hong Kong Sign Language and the general principles for communicating with deaf people in a visual-gestural modality. With different videoed scenarios, students are systematically guided to acquire elementary signing skills for fulfilling basic communication needs in everyday situations. Emphasis will be placed on a range of simple, general-purpose expressions, which allow students to converse with local deaf people, as well as prepares themselves for learning the language further. Upon completion of this course, students will develop Hong Kong Sign Language proficiency at Level Pre-A1, which represents a milestone halfway towards Level A1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

本網上科目幫助學生學習基本的香港手語知識，運用視覺動作的語言頻道跟聾人溝通。學生將透過不同的場景，有序地學習基本手語技巧，應付日常溝通所需。本科目重點教授一系列簡單、具普遍性的用語，培訓學生以手語跟本地聾人溝通的能力，並為日後繼續學習手語打好基礎。
