A communication disorder is an impairment in the ability to receive, send, process, and comprehend concepts or verbal, nonverbal, and graphic symbol systems. It may be evident in hearing, language, and/or speech, and may range in severity from mild to profound. Speech and language impairment (SLI) refers to one or a combination of the following conditions: speech sound disorders, voice disorders, fluency disorders, and language disorders. Students with SLI may encounter difficulties in communicating effectively with others, affecting self-esteem and the development of social relationships. They may have difficulties in understanding and/or giving oral presentations, struggle in following rapid verbal exchanges, and have limited participation in classes. They may also lack confidence in speaking in public or large groups, which may affect adaptation to course work and university life. This course aims to promote good health and well-being, reduce inequality, facilitate equal access to quality education, and enhance understanding of SLI.
